Electoral College: Meet Trump
I have been interested in history and politics since middle school, even choosing to study politics and international relations in college. As Americans, we learned a bit about the Constitution and some of its parts. Some seem to only know the 2nd Amendment and throw the word ‘unconstitutional’ around as though they actually knew what it meant. However, there is one part that has always baffled us, especially since the presidential election of 2000: the electoral college.
Those pesky two words have caused a puzzled look on people’s faces with the words ‘what the hell’ on at least two occasions in our history. The Founding Fathers believed in democracy, power of the people, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness and so on and so on. They believed in constructing a document and foundation that was fluid and could change fitting the ever evolving times and strife the country endured. But, they created a republic and feared at times a population that could be ignorant and uneducated with a possible mob mentality. They feared mob rule. And with that, an electorate that would vote for a dangerous candidate.
So to protect us from said mob, we vote but yet it is a group of electors that actually cast the vote and then counted for president and vice president.
I knew this but never really quite felt its significance because I figured it fit their times, not ours. Clearly I was wrong. Enter Trump (and even Cruz). Now since Trump is “tired of all this politically correct crap” then I’ll respond in kind.
He is a vile and repugnant man that cares for nothing and no one but himself. For any one to think that he cares or understands their lives as a middle class working Joe, looking down on all of us from his white ivory tower since childhood, they have been so misled. And looking down as he shows us often from his plane and helicopter. He so often reminds us he’s worth billions, says “he’ll be the smartest president we’ve ever had,” he will be the “healthiest” we’ve ever had, etc. He constantly starts a figurative pissing contest with just about any one. Do people not see a pattern? It is classic over compensation.
He is nothing more than an adult toddler. When he doesn’t get his way, tantrum. When he thinks some one hurt his feelings, tantrum. He lashes out, name calls, juvenile gestures, on and on and on. All like a toddler.
His mob of followers think it’s great and shows good character that he just says what ever he wants. No. It is what happens when you had a wealthy upbringing and so wealthy now that you don’t work for any one and can say what you want, when you want and how you want. And the rest of us, must smile, do our job and let him do it. (Not all wealthy people are like that obviously.) He’s the kid that no one liked, no girl would go out with and would not have friends except they were figuratively bought. It’s the same thing today. He buys his wives — apologize to them but clearly it’s true. I have no doubt the “friends” he speaks of would abandon him if he lost his money. (Not sure he knows it, but I think by law some of us money, property and businesses would have to go into blind trusts of some sort until he is not president.) And obviously all of the outrageous ideas, claims and so called policies he says he will do are smothered in danger.
He has a scorch earth policy. He wants to win so badly, regardless what it is that he will burn the land to evict people and make it worthless if that gets him the deed. He is doing that now with America and will do that if he got the keys to The White House. I wouldn’t be surprised if he put a Trump sign on the north and south lawns. It’s about stroking his ever so bloated ego. He gets off on it, probably literally at night looking at the number of his twitter followers, the number at his rallies, how many google links he has, etc. Example one, he gets mad at the media for not reporting the number at his rallies, which he always adds thousands more than it was. He is dangerous.
His ex-wife has admitted, I believe he has in some part as well, to owning Hitler’s Mein Kampf. That is troubling especially now because he is following Hitler’s same playbook. Seriously. People like them see a belief certain people have or a mood in the country and will stop at nothing to capitalize on that belief and manipulate the small number of people that have it. Then with rhetoric and the beat of a drum so to speak, build on it, all the while gaining power. It’s dangerous. There is no depravity he will not touch. They find some thing that is wrong and blame a group collectively for it. He and others are blaming roughly 2 billion people collectively for some thing they have nothing to do with. Islam is the largest religion in the world and a peaceful one. I never would have thought 2 billion people could formulate, communicate and organize specific terrorist actions at once. The terrorists are doing exactly the same thing as Hitler, the IRA and Trump, finding some thing, poverty and religion for example, and using it as a means to their own end.
With all this and more, it’s clear his mob followers do not know better. He does. He’s taking the easy way. It’s difficult to be a leader, diplomat and statesman knowing the gravity of the situation in this world. What they say and do matters. He’s not even president and look at damage he has already caused. America really is the leader in many things in the world, now more than ever; therefore the president represents America yes, but in a lot of ways, the peace and stability of the world collectively. That means that one person can seriously help or seriously destabilize things globally — eg Dick Cheney and his Iraq. Trump does not respect the office he seeks, nor others that served it.
The Electoral College was made for people like him if it comes to that, at least in theory. Of the 50 states, 24 have no legal requirement for the electors to vote for the specific candidate chosen by the people. The others, state law and or the parties require them to. But, most importantly, of those 24 about half go Republican. Therefore, those electors could still cast a Republican vote, just not for him.
That probably would not happen. And, I’m not one for going down dangerous roads with our elections, making us look like some banana republic as with the 2000 election, where any thing can happen. But, clearly it already has.
